There
are a lot of challenges that a new mom faces when bringing up her child and one
of them is potty training. It's quite a relief for moms when their child stops
using the diaper and starts using the potty but nothing comes easy so moms are
usually faced with a lot of huddles before they actually reach their goal.
One
challenge comes about as a result of accidents and bedwetting. Even though you
are potty training your child, a child might poop on themselves or pee on
themselves due to the fact that they are still trying to adjust. As for
bedwetting children are heavy sleepers and most of the times they tend to sleep
through their need to go to the toilet. The reality is it takes a child up to
four or five years to actually make it through the night.
Another
stark challenge is the fact that there kids who simply refuse to use a potty. This
could be because they are not emotionally ready and you keep pushing them so
they refuse to poop and thus causing constipation. Its however important to
note that constipation could also be as a result of insufficient vegetables in
the diet. Refusal to use the potty could also be as a result of fear. They
could have seen a child being punished in preschool for having an accident or
had a bowel movement accidentally and so they are scared that if they mess the
potty you will be angry at them too.
Regression
is when the child goes back to bedwetting and having accidents after being
fully potty trained. This could happen due to some major changes in a child’s
life. It could be separation or a new child is added to the family and so they
have a setback so that they might not get to be center of attention again. It could
be due to something that is stressing your child’s life. Starting a new class
or an activity like maybe football. It might seem as nothing major to you but
the stress of meeting new people, leaving home for the first time for a whole
day, the pressure to perform at sports could cause major stress in a small
child’s life. It happens even to adults. The other reason for this could be
sexual abuse. This is traumatizing to the mother as well as the child. Due to
the stress and shock the child can start having accidents again.
Another
setback could be when your child refuses to use the toilet at school and comes
home having soiled him or herself. It could be that maybe he is afraid of
telling the teacher that he needs to go to the toilet or the thought of going
to the toilet with the other children scares him because he is used to going to
the potty alone or it could be that the school just has a normal toilet instead
of the potty that he is used to and so he opts not to relieve himself and so he
stays with the poop or urine until they overpower him and he lets go.
